St. Ambrose Responsoral Psalms

The St. Ambrose Responsorial Psalms is a project aimed at reviving the organum style of singing liturgical music for the modern church. These contain simple melodies written for two voices (with optional organ accompaniment) and are written in the old Greek modes as such music in this style would be heard in many centuries ago.

The responses are as they appear in the lectionary but the verses are set to the King James Version for poetic reasons. You will need permission (at least in the U.S.) from your diocese's office of worship to use these at mass but may be used for private devotions and other services freely.

Each response is written in a way that imitates the natural rhythm of the spoken word. Because of this, there may be a bit of rhythmic subtlety that cannot be indicated by notation. Singers are encouraged to speak the words several times first before singing. The response melodies are predominantly syllabic (one note per syllable) whereas they are more neumatic (multiple notes per syllable) for major feasts and solemnities.

The main goals of this project are to provide new vocal music in English that creates a sense of ancient harmony as well as provide a means of not needing to have an accompanist to sing with using only English texts. The latter goal is particularly useful during Advent and Lent when the organ should be subdued or silent except when supporting singers.

These are free to use publically or privately as long as no alterations, arrangements, or re-transcriptions are made without permission and the copyright notice stays on each page. If you find these useful for your liturgical purposes, please consider making a donation or sending me recordings for examples.

Please feel free to report any errors or inconsistencies you may find.
